Retired Army Soldier Pursues Lifelong Career Dream
BLOOMINGTON, IN - May 25, 2008- Hal Myers a Bloomington, IN resident and recent retiree from the United States Army is embarking on a trip to pursue his lifelong dream of a career in baseball and to bring awareness of the employability of veterans of the armed forces. Hal retired 1 January 2008, as an 80% service connected disabled veteran after serving over 24 years on active duty with the US Army. On 2 June 2008, Hal will embark on a trip to work as a free employee for minor league baseball organizations for 2-4 day stints with the goal of acquiring as much hands on experience and networking for contacts as possible, in the pursuit of his lifelong dream career. Growing up, Hal dreamed of playing professional baseball, not having the talent; ended that dream early and started the dream to work in baseball. He joined the military at the age of 17 reaching the rank of Master Sergeant at his retirement. He served in Germany, Korea, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and many different stateside locations including Texas, Florida, Alabama and Indiana. Feeling his age (42) and lack of experience would prevent him from obtaining a job with a baseball organization, he started planning this trip by contacting organizations offering his services free of charge, only asking them for their mentorship, guidance, the opportunity to learn and maybe a free t-shirt and hat! Hal's plan is to seek employment with a baseball organization in the fall utilizing the hands on experience he gains from this trip, coupled with his experience gained in the military. Hal has established a web site www.baseballcareertrip.com on which he will maintain a blog of his experiences along with a calendar of his itinerary. This is a very fluid endeavor, teams are still being lined up and dates arranged. Hal is seeking corporate sponsorship to cover the expenses of this trip such as hotels, restaurants, gas, etc. He does not want to make any profit from this endeavor and is asking that any private donations be made to, The Disabled America Veterans @ www.DAV.org or a local veteran's organization.
